Toe nail fungus is a condition that affects the nails on the toes. It is characterized by discoloration of the infected nails, the thickening and crumbing of the infected toes; and if unchecked for long, complete damage to the afflicted toe-nails.
Thankfully, there are a number of treatment options for toe fungus. These toe nail fungus treatment can be seen as falling into two major categories: natural toe-nail-fungus treatments, and pharmaceutical toe-fungus treatments.
Taking the natural toe-nail fungus treatments, for a start, we would be looking at the various home remedies that have been shown to help people with toe nail fungus in resolving the problem. A good example of these is tea tree oil. So effective, in fact, is tea tree oil as a treatment for toe fungus that it has over time come to earn the acceptance of mainstream medical practitioners, who typically advise people seeing them for the toe-nail fungus problems to first try using tea tree oil at home, before thinking of any other treatment option if the tea tree oil fails (which it rarely does, if used correctly). The efficacy of tea tree oil as a toe nail fungus treatment can probably be attributed to the herb's antimicrobial capabilities, so that its topical application on the nails afflicted by toe fungus directly results in the death of the nail fungus causing the problem. Now while natural treatments for toe-nail fungus can be quite effective, anyone embarking on such a course of treatment would need to do so aware that it can be a bit time consuming, and one shouldn't give up if they don't see instant results. Indeed, it can be months before one gets rid of toe fungus with the help of a natural treatment like tea tree oil. Yet in spite of the slow speed of action, this natural approach to the toe nail problem is the recommended first line of defense, before one starts thinking of other alternatives.
The pharmaceutical treatments for toe-nail-fungus, on the other hand, include the wide range of anti-fungal drugs (some sold over the counter, and some sold on a prescription basis), that are taken to combat the toe nail problem. Like the natural treatments for toe nail-fungus, a vast majority of the pharmaceutical solutions to the problem are applied directly on the afflicted nails, in what is also called topical application. A number, however, are taken orally (either in the form of pills or capsules), to resolve the toe-fungus problem 'from within.' Most of these pharmaceutical treatments for toe nail fungus work by directly attacking the fungus causing the problem, though there are many that in addition to this, also work by strengthening the bodies immunity, to make it less vulnerable to infections like the toe fungus in question. While many of these pharmaceutical formulations against the toe nail problem can be extremely efficient (sometimes resolving the problems in just a few days), a good number of them are known to come with potential for quite serious side effects, in the long run: hence the need for caution in their use.
