What to Know About the Flu Shot

Guess what time of year it is? FLU SEASON! Schools are in their second month, its dark outside early, you're picking your Halloween candy and every other person is home sick with the Flu. More then ever doctors and medical center are pushing for the public to get the Flu Shot and stay healthy. There are a few things you may want to know about the flu vaccine and the flu.

What is in a Flu Shot?

It is a inactivated vaccine which is the dead influenza virus. Each shot contains three different viruses-one A (H3N2) virus, one regular seasonal A (H1N1) virus, and one B virus. It typically takes 2 weeks after vaccination to be protected.

Who should get one?

Pregnant women, Children from 6 months to 19 years old, Adults 50 years and older, all seniors, Health Care Workers and anyone with a chronic condition.

When should I get the shot?

Flu season starts in November and ends in April. The flu shot is usually available in September. As of today, 9/10/09 I know a number of Walgreen's throughout the country have the Vaccine in stock.

Any Side Effects?

There are all different side effects but common side effects are Redness, soreness and swelling where the short was given. Some aches and fever do occur. This is usually with the first 2 days.

As I said earlier, there is a big push for the vaccine this year, I feel more then ever. There are many different places offering the flu shot and some even guaranteeing it will be in stock. Other then your doctors office you can go to Target, Walmart, Costco, Walgreen's, CVS, Rite Aid as an alternative to your local doctors office. By going to a local pharmacy it could save you time and money.
